A fantastic visit this week to Giffnock Soccer Centre to meet some of the team of volunteers who make this brilliant local club such a valued part of the local community.
With the aim of providing footballing opportunities for all, it was very clear that they worked hard to bring their inclusive ethos to bear. This has led to them having 1400 players ranging from age 4 - 84, playing football at all levels, girls and boys, and accessible football.
They have seen real success with their Ladies Walking Football team victorious last year in the Scottish Cup, the senior team this season joining West of Scotland League Division Four, and most recently the 2005s team winning the Paisley Johnstone and District Division 1 League.
I was very pleased to table an Early Day Motion commending the 2005s and all involved with the club on their success, and it was brilliant to get the chance to go along and hear more about their ambitious plans.
The benefits of the opportunity for everyone to play football locally, including the obvious fitness gains, teamwork, and in terms of mental health can’t be underestimated. A huge well done to GSC, who are a real East Ren success story. I’m sure they’ll continue to grow and succeed.
