Uyghur Muslim Debate

Today, I have spoken in a debate on the genocide of the Uyghur Muslim population in Xinjiang Province in China. The evidence of the horrific treatment of the Uyghur people is chilling. Forced labour camps, 're-education', forced sterilisation, systematic rape, torture and death.

We know this, and yet no action is taken. We even know that the clothes on our backs could well have come from these forced labour camps, but no action is taken. We cannot go on simultaneously wringing our hands and closing our eyes.

The excellent organisation, Yet Again, co-founded by East Renfrewshire woman, Kirsty Robson, has supported important work on highlighting the need to acknowledge and act. I applaud this work, and hope that the UK Government hears what they say, and also hears the strength of feeling among MPs from across the chamber today. They must not ignore these atrocities in the scramble for trade deals, and we must call it out for what it is.
