Urgent Question: Northern Ireland

Updated: May 25, 2020

Glad to be back in the virtual parliament today, participating in an Urgent Question session relating to Northern Ireland.

A few months ago, Boris Johnson told business leaders in Northern Ireland that there would be no forms, no checks, no barriers of any kind, and that if anyone asked them to fill in a form, they should tear it up.

But the UK Government paper published today makes it clear that there will be new admin procedures, and says these could be burdensome.

It seems to me that their words on Brexit are not to be relied upon, and until there is some clarity, this is yet another good reason why an extension to the Brexit transition period is necessary.

Brexit is not what we need here, and these arrangements plainly put Scotland in a disadvantageous position too. Nothing in this is clear, and nothing positive. Time to press pause.
