Guide Dog Access Walk

Kirsten

Did you know that three quarters of Guide Dog owners have experienced access refusals - that is where they have been denied the ability to use services which the rest of us take for granted. That may be refusal of access to transport, retail or other services.

Today, I went for a walkabout in the Cross Arthurlie area of Barrhead with constituent Colin, and his lovely guide dog Jumble. We visited a large number of local businesses to talk to them about this issue, and we were absolutely blown away by the welcome we received everywhere.

These businesses are now proudly displaying their new window stickers, making it known to everyone that they are open for business for guide dog owners. A big thanks to the The Brig Inn Barrhead, GMarshall Travel, Bluestone Gift Shops, Barrhead Post Office, Moda Dea, Skinfade Turkish Style Barber, MacPhees Sandwich Bar & Deli, Barrhead Shoe Repairs and F & M Hairdressing

In some areas, there are reported concerns regarding access to taxi services, so a particular thank you to both Arthurlie Cars and Compass Cabs who went out of their way to spend time talking to us about the importance of access to their services.

Many thanks to Guide Dogs Scotland for their support. You can read more about their important campaigning on this issue here: https://www.guidedogs.org.uk/.../our-current.../open-doors/
