Things are hard enough during this Westminster cost of living crisis without additional shortfalls in your income because you're a mum. Research clearly shows the financial penalty which women, and in particular women of colour, face at work because they are mothers.
There are obvious ways we can take action to make things fairer, so there is more money in the pockets of these mums. The UK Government are, regrettably, not taking these actions. It's obvious that their long promised Employment Bill is never going to arrive.
More regrettably, Scotland has not got the power over employment law, so we can't take matters in our own hands and make work fairer ourselves. There's an obvious answer to that of course, but until we are independent, we must have the power over employment so we can act to make work fairer for everyone.
