Civic Holocaust Memorial Service

Glad to join the large numbers attending the annual Civic Holocaust Memorial Service at Glasgow Reform Synagogue in Newton Mearns yesterday morning, along with colleagues Cllr Tony Buchanan and Cllr Colm Merrick SNP.

A moving and thought provoking service which was focussed on the life of Jane Haining, a Church of Scotland missionary who was sent to Auschwitz, where she died, because she would not leave behind the children in the school where she was Matron. She said: “If these children need me in days of sunshine, how much more must they need me in days of darkness?”

I have spoken often of Jane Haining and the extraordinary love she demonstrated, and concern for others regardless of the personal cost. It was wonderful to learn of all the work going on between interfaith parters to bring her story to our schools.
